Pre Thanksgiving Weekend
Holiday rush is in the air… Lots of inventory coming in… I have to say the coolest thing that came in this week was a book named The Maker's Diet. I did not read the entire book but I skimmed as I often do and I came across the most interesting thing last night...
When I was a little girl and living in North Carolina I dug a hole in my backyard and played in it for hours on end. I made mud pies constantly. I dug so deep I hit water and I thought if I kept digging I would reach China, but I never did. Anyway I have to say kids today have too much stimulation and not enough exposure to nature. I have 2 kids and try to get them outside as much as possible.
So in this book it was talking about “soil” and how important it is for kids to actually get dirty. We are a nation of antibacterial this and antibacterial that. This is a great book but I have to say I never knew the importance of soil and the importance of us coming in contact with it. It says it can be good for kids to be exposed to lots of soil. It really makes sense to me.
So before I went to bed I plotted how I would tell my husband that my daughter Topanga and I were going to dig a hole in our yard.
Mid morning Topanga and I go out with our shovels and pick a spot on the beautiful green grass and begin to dig. I told her the importance of getting dirty. She liked that idea. I told her that the soil is healing and that the dirtier she got the better. So we come in and wash rocks we found and go about our day…I also took my 1 ½ yr old son out and got his hands as dirty as possible. He seemed to like it.
Later in the day my husband is on the phone talking to his friend and proceeds to tell him that all the mothers in our neighborhood are out raking leaves as good new England mothers should be but his wife was outside digging a 5 ft. hole on the green grass in our yard. I thought that was really funny. I suppose I am not the traditional mother…
